【Scouting report】Aiming to return to the world stage under a new head coach - Chinese Taipei Women's National Team (EAFF E-1 Football Championship 2022 Final Japan)

The Chinese Taipei Women's National Team have been a dominant force since the late 1970s, when women's football in Asia began to take off. From the second to fourth editions (1977, 1979, 1981) of the AFC Women's Championship (now the AFC Women's Asian Cup), they achieved the feat of winning three consecutive titles without conceding a goal in any of their matches. The fourth tournament held in Hong Kong was the first international competition in which the Japan Women's National Team participated, and Japan's memorable first international A-match was against Chinese Taipei. The match, which took place on 7 June 1981, was won by Chinese Taipei 1-0, after they converted a corner kick in the second half. It was the match that started the run towards their third consecutive Asian title.

Chinese Taipei continued to be one of the strongest teams in Asia, reaching the quarterfinals of the inaugural FIFA Women's World Championship (now the FIFA Women's World Cup™) in 1991 held in China PR. However, from the 2000s onwards, the team started to fall behind other teams in terms of their development speed.

After head coach ECHIGO Kazuo took over in 2019, the team qualified for the Women's Asian Cup for the first time in four tournaments in 2022. Despite losing to the Philippines in a penalty shoot-out in the quarterfinals, a subsequent placement play-off saw them progress to a play-off tournament (scheduled for February 2023) for a place in the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia/ New Zealand 2023™. They remain in with a chance of qualifying for the FIFA Women's World Cup™ for the first time since the first edition in 1991.

This is Chinese Taipei's second consecutive appearance in the EAFF E-1 Football Championship and, as in the previous tournament, they were promoted following DPR Korea's withdrawal from the competition. In the last tournament, they played their first match against the Nadeshiko Japan (Japan Women's National Team) and lost 0-9, with the first goal scored by SEIKE Kiko (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Urawa Reds Ladies), who was making her international A-match debut.

The team is led by head coach YEN Shih-kai, who took over in April this year, and goalkeeper CHENG Ssu-yu, who plays for JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies in the WE League, is also in the squad. The team will use this tournament as a steppingstone to revive their old powerhouse status, and aim for the world stage once again.
