On Wednesday 8 August, the Suruga Bank Championship 2018 OSAKA took place where the Champions of J.League YBC Levain Cup and CONMEBOL Copa Sudamericana square off, as the title holders, Cereso Osaka and Independiente faced each other in Osaka.
The match kicked off at 19:00 under an energetic atmosphere, with so many Independiente fans showing their support for the team at Yanmar Stadium Nagai.
Cereso Osaka rotated many of their players since their last league match as Coach YOON Jong Hwan made it clear that they will “Enter the match with an emphasis on defence,” the team started off the match against the South-American Champions with a formation consisting five-man in the back. However, the match progressed with the South-American side showing their dominance as they took the upper hand with their techniques and power. Cereso’s team captain AKIYAMA Daichi later reflected, “We played too deep and gave them too much space in the first half.”
The opening goal came in the 28th minute when Independiente’s Martin BENITEZ delivered a pass towards the goal, which was once deflected by the Cereso defender, but Silvio ROMERO was there to collect the loose ball in front of the goal, as he calmly went passed the goalkeeper and slotted the ball into the net.
Three minutes after they conceded the opener, TANAKA Yusuke received a pass from OSMAR in the left flank, before sending a through ball upfront. TAKAGI Toshiyuki responded to the delivery and struck a left footed shot, but his shot sailed just over the cross bar.
The match entered halftime as Independiente kept the ball possession to sustain their lead.
In efforts to change the momentum of the match, Cereso Osaka utilised their substitutes during halftime, and the players responded by creating chances in the second half. In the 58th minute, second half substitute TANAKA Atomu delivered a corner kick which was flicked by FUJIMOTO Kota who made a run to the near post, but his attempt was denied by a superb save made by the opposing goalkeeper.
Independiente’s Coach Ariel HOLAN later mentioned that his side “Ran out of gas” towards the end of the match. Cereso kept on attacking as ANDO Mizuki made a run to chase a through ball in the 72nd minute, firing a powerful right footed shot, but his effort was blocked by the opposing defender. The Osaka side struggled to create further opportunities as the match ended with a final score of 0-1. The cup winner, Independiente celebrated by wearing a t-shirt that had the number “18” printed, which represents the number of international titles they have earned over the years.

Despite losing the match, our players fought well even with the number of new players we brought in today. However, we concede the opening goal in the first half while we were still making the adjustments on the pitch. It would’ve been better if we could have managed to utilise the time more effectively. Our opponents showcased great physical speed while their ball movements were also at a fast pace. Once we managed to make the adjustments, I think we displayed a good performance, but with the lack of goals, we couldn’t win the match. The players did a great job until the very end. Our substitutes showed great heart as they were seen chasing down the ball until the last seconds. We hope to utilise this experience to better ourselves. It is truly regretful that we couldn’t show a winning performance in front of this big crowd, but we will continue to work hard as we move forward.

With the team adapting a new system, many players struggled to understand the new tactics. In those situations, our performance may not be so great, just as we have shown in the first half today. The South-American Champions will punish you if we give them too much space. During the first half, our opponents showcased great confidence in moving the ball and if we could have applied more pressure, maybe the match progressed differently. It would have been best if we could have reset our minds and proved our ability ahead of our next match, but the result didn’t comply with our wishes. We will take home what we’ve learnt from this match, discuss how we can better ourselves as a team and move forward.

We managed to show dominance in the first half. The match went just as we planned. The Cereso side made efforts to create opportunities, but we marked their players well and denied them from initiating attacks. However, we gave up some chances in the second half. Our players seemed fatigued, and maybe that gave our opponents extra motivation to attack. We were performing well until the first 10 minutes of the second half, but from then on, we looked out of gas. We tried to manage the risks in defence by paying close attention to the plays off the ball, but even so our opponents created chances, so we must improve in that aspect.
