Participation in the United Nations Global Compact

On 7th July 2009, Japan Football Association(JFA) was registered as the 93rd industry/organization participating to the United Nations’ project “Global Compact”. FC Barcelona was the first football club participating to this project, but JFA was the first sports supervising organisation to be registered. United Nations Global Compact is a “platform of United Nations agencies, private industries and non-profit organisations” which was founded in order to fight against the various problems ( disparity in wealth, corruption, pollution, social discrimination) of an international society where, with the globalization of the economy, the inequality is becoming more and more serious. In this project, proposed in 1999 in Davos by UN-Secretary-general Kofi Annan and officially launched in 2000, each company/ organization are exerting a voluntary/ creative/ cooperative leadership and leading various projects ( business activities and social activities) with responsibility in order to achieve a sustainable growth all over the world. Actually more than 120 countries and more than 7000 companies and organisations all over the world are participating to this project. JFA found that its activities based on “JFA’s principles” were coinciding with the United Nations Global Compact project, and on 1st July sent to the United Nations headquarters a signed letter of oath and was registered. Football is a sport that is loved all over the world and it is thought it has a great influence. Expectation for JFA and Football Family all over Japan is high and Global Compact Japan Network’s related people are expecting that, with JFA’s registration, this project will spread in the world of sports.
