The third round matches of the 94th Emperor’s Cup were held on 20 August throughout the nation. J2’s Jubilo Iwata passed Nara Club (Nara) from Kansai League by defeating them 5-0 and advanced to the fourth round.
Jubilo, sitting third in the J2 table, boldly implemented 3-back format for the first time in this season only after two days of break following the last match in the league. Jubilo challenged quickly and aggressively from the start, led by three fast-footed forwards Popo, Baek Sung Dong and Yamazaki Ryohei.
On the other hand, although they beat J3’s Fukushima United in the first round and J1’s Vegalta Sendai in the second round, Nara Club started slow in the first half and failed to put enough enough pressure on the opposition, which made the match very tough for them.
MF Ono Yusuke, however, ran into the box after responding to a long feed from FW Tsurumi Toshitaka, but GK Hatta Naoki gathered the ball ahead of him in the 19th minute. Then, Jubilo connected passes from the goalkeeper to open the score sheet.
When MF Kobayashi Yuki dribbled up the pitch, passed two defenders and fired a tight-angle shot, it bounced off the post before Popo kicked the deflection into the net
10 minutes later, DF Morishita Shun picked up a cleared ball after a shot attempt by Yamazaki and fed the ball to the far corner, where Yamazaki again head in the ball to double the lead for his side.
In the 38th minute of the first half, Yamazaki scored a penalty kick awarded for DF Kinoshita Takaaki stumbling in the box. Then just before the break, Popo burst into the box and headed home a cross from Peak to end the first half 4-0.
Nara Club, looking for a chance to make a comeback, sent MF Yoshida Tomohisa and FW Tsutsumi Takahiro onto the pitch at the start of the second half so that their attacking side gained momentum to come close to the goal.
In the 4th minute after the break, Tsutsumi’s close header hit off the crossbar but was ruled offside. After another 4 minutes, Tsutsumi again came close but his shot missed the goal by only inches. In the 12th minute, DF Nomoto Yasutaka fed a grounder cross to Tsutsumi again, but his left-footed effort flew over the bar.
Jubilo sent Matsui Daisuke in the 19th minute of the second half. 9 minutes later, when the former Japan international fed a well-directed cross to the far corner, MF Miyazaki Tomohiko put it in the back of the net with his left-footed strike to turn the score into 5-0.
Right after that, Nara Club’s FW Ikeda Masahiro was substituted into the match and came close to the goal on the counter attack, but they could not find the goal until the end.
In the upcoming fourth round, Jubilo will face Cerezo Osaka, who defeated Kataller Toyama (J2) 1-0.
In other contests, Yokohama F. Marinos, the defending champion, lost to Giravanz Kitakyushu 2-3 in the extra halves, and Kashiwa Reysol, the champion two years ago, were eliminated in an 11-12 shootout loss following the extra halves at 1-1. The J1 leader Urawa Reds lost to Thespakusatsu Gumma 1-2, the second placed Kawasaki Frontale lost to Ehime FC 0-1 and Albirex Niigata lost to V-Varen Nagasaki 1-2. All of them were washed out of the tournament in the third round.
On a side note, the match between Sanfrecce Hiroshima (J1) and Mito Hollyhock (J2) scheduled at Edion Stadium Hiroshima was postponed to 27th to be kicked off at 7 p.m. at the same stadium in order to prioritise the rescue work for the massive landslides caused by torrential rains.

Pericles CHAMUSCA, Head Coach (Jubilo IWATA)
It was very good to win the game scoreless as I wanted to see stable defense. We’ve been training three back from last week but we had only one day practice with today’s member. The players did a very good job. I requested the squad to play with concentration and combative spirit as the other side is quite strong club having beaten clubs of J3 and J1. We were successful in making fast forward player effective in front line and much aggressive at capturing the ball and moving forward. Not that I was satisfied with everything, I must note it is important to widen the goal difference.
FW YAMAZAKI Ryohei (Jubilo IWATA)
We were talking each other to play aggressively, not waiting for their offense as they had been on a roll. The biggest thing was we could score quite a few goals in the beginning. It was good to get used to the new system. But personally speaking, I made some mistakes in the game. I want to improve that point for us to create more time for offense, making sure to identify when to keep exchanging the pass and when to make a charge. Even though we were experiencing tough games, I really look forward to playing many games as well as playing against J1 club.
NAKAMURA Atsushi, Head Coach (Nara Club)
First half was everything. We should have played the way we played in the second half from the beginning. Having been slow in defense and lack of skill, we felt some pressure and too fast in kicking the ball. The other side’s tactics, system and members were all within our anticipation. But the speed of counter attack, etc. was totally different from that of the regional league we usually play, that is something we could not cope with. Today’s opponent ? three forward players and Matsui demonstrated their speed, technique, and decisive play and you can never find a hard-working player like Yamazaki in Kansai League. I am sure this game will be our great asset in preparation for upcoming games for promoting to JFL.
GK Junnosuke SCHNEIDER (Nara Club)
In second half, we could keep the ball courageously and showed our strengths, we should have finish the first half 0-0 or 0-1 and score one goal. It looks like we were riding on the roller coaster watching both heaven and hell at the Emperor’s Cup. It was historical achievement for the club to win against Vegalta Sendai. Without doubt, Jubilo Iwata is one of distinguished club. This game taught us our club is still at level of the regional league. Going to face critical match shortly, we want to keep our head high and switch ourselves to prepare for the next game.
FW OKAYAMA Kazunari (Nara Club)
We were lack of the devotion we demonstrated in the game against Vegalta Sendai. We were bit out of mind and I must admit I was too excited about it.
In that sense, the team was not fully united. We showed some gaps and Jubilo players were high on alert on the pitch. It was a good lesson for us. Going back to Nara without being obsequious, I am committed to hold training for the upcoming big game. Many people came to the game getting interested in the club, I want to work hard to increase the number of people like this.
