Prince Takamado Trophy U-18 Premier League EAST entered its 17th week on Sunday 30 November, and league-leaders Kashiwa Reysol U-18 (Chiba) faced Aomori Yamada High School (Aomori). Kashiwa’s East title was sealed before the start of this match, when second-placed Shimizu S-Pulse Youth (Shizuoka) lost to Ichiritsu Funabashi High School (Chiba). Kashiwa claimed their first championship in their first promotion season and will contend for the Japan’s No.1 crown against WEST champions on Sunday 14 December.

Aomori Yamada took the initiative early in the match. They got close to the opposing goal in the 19th minute when Noguchi Yuki’s cross-like shot directly hit off the post. Meanwhile, Kashiwa looked for gaps with crisp passes but did not make it against Aomori Yamada’s defence who sat back in their end. Conversely in the 39th minute, Kashiwa was threatened by opponents when they allowed Aomori Yamada’s Kido Ryuki to break through their defence before Noguchi took an unguarded shot.

In the second half, Kashiwa moved around the ball and edged toward the opposing goal against Aomori Yamada with tight defence. As “we could have taken more middle-range shots against opponents sitting back,” said Aizu Yuki, Kashiwa moved the ball deep inside the opposing end but was not able to convert them into goal-scoring opportunities against Aomori Yamada’s intense defence. After sending in replacements later in the match, Kashiwa’s substitute Yamamoto Kenji got through into the box for a golden opportunity, but his shot was denied by the post in the additional time. The match remained scoreless until the end. Kashiwa and Aomori Yamada shared one point.

We kept our style of football so that we could win the EAST title. We always stick to possessing the ball and worked on our football to take the initiative in a game even when such persistency worked negatively. As our EAST title was confirmed before the start of the game, today’s game turned out to be mentally difficult. Early in the game, a few players tried to be a hero and our attacks didn’t work. But in the second half, we were able to adjust, and it was good to have such opportunity to look to the negative side before the championship.

We got prepared for the game as we saw this match being one of the Premier League matches. We earned one point keeping a clean sheet but had some scary moments in our defensive situations. That’s what we need to improve. I take the EAST title as one of the steps for the championship. I can play both in the midfield and centre in the defensive line, so I hope I can show how I handle the ball with my feet and how I lead my team as the captain. We will win the championship by our possession football that we have worked on.

Because we failed to break through opposing defence sitting back, the game was a bit frustrating. If you possess the ball, you wouldn’t concede a goal or lose the game, but we need a win at the championship. To win the game, we need not only to pass but also to take shots from middle distance and dribble through the defence. My strength is the ability to keep running late in a game. I believe our efforts will pay off at the championship that will be the finale of my three-year high school spell. I will try to shine in the final stage.

KURODA Go (Aomori Yamada)
We were successful in keeping our front, midfield and defensive line compact and defending without chasing opponents around too much. When we put pressure, the opponents escaped with back passes, so we were able to push up during that. I feel Kashiwa tried to be nice because their league title was already determined. Anyways, as we had been losing close games since the beginning of the season, today we were able take advantage of learning from those past games. My players must get some confidence out of this match.

In the contest between Ichiritsu Funabashi High School (Chiba) and Shimizu S-Pulse Youth (Shizuoka), the deadlock was broken in the second half after the first half remained at 0-0. After Uzawa Keita’s opening goal in the 50th minute, Ichiritsu Funabashi added two more until the 69th minute to beat Shimizu. Tokyo Verdy Youth (Tokyo), already set to be relegated, defeated Kashima Antlers Youth (Ibaraki) with two own-goals. Mitsubishi Yowa SC Youth (Tokyo) thrashed Consadole Sapporo (Hokkaido) 3-0 with two goals from Shimoda Yuya. The clash between JFA Academy Fukushima (Shizuoka) and Ryutsu Keizai Kashiwa High School (Chiba) ended with a 1-1 draw.
