Nadeshiko Japan (Japan Women's National Team short-listed squad) finishes the first training camp in Ishigaki

Japan Women’s National Team short-listed squad finished their eight-day training camp on Monday 25 January in preparation for the final Asian qualifying for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

As the coach SASAKI Norio had left to visit the opposing countries, the coach NAKAMURA Jun led the team’s practice sessions. The players did the yo-yo test and 6-on-2, followed by a mini game in groups of six. Then they practiced shots individually and did some conditioning through core exercises or running.

When asked about the team’s condition, MIYAMA Aya noted: "although we are never satisfied with ourselves, we’re improving without doubt."

The next activity for the team will be the Okinawa training camp in the middle of February. There will be a three-week break before that. The players shared what kind of condition they should be in when they meet again. They will practice individually back in their respective club teams, in order to get themselves ready for the coming games. The first game of the final Asian qualifying round will be held on Monday 29 February in Osaka. Japan will meet Australia. All five matches will be held at the Kincho Stadium.

Players' Comments

MF  MIYAMA Aya (Okayama Yunogo Belle)
We practiced together, focusing on details, in preparation for the Olympic qualifiers. The coach proposed something new to us, and we’re preparing ourselves for that. I think individual players have to understand and use each other’s strength, rather than trying to stand out from the rest of the team, so that we can claim the gold medal. The more I think about it, the more I expect tough games in the qualifying round. Having said that, I’d like to enjoy them in a positive and cheerful state of mind to book a place at the Olympics, instead of just saying: "oh it’s tough. It’s hard."

MF  NAKAJIMA Emi (INAC Kobe)
I came here to do everything I can, so that I’ll be chosen for the team in the qualifying round. Despite some bad weather, all the players focused on coordinating and cooperating in defence. I’d like to improve accuracy in attack, while staying strong near the ball, and cooperating with my teammates in defence.
