Match Report
The Japan national women’s U-19 shortlisted squad played a training match of three 30-minute periods against Kajiki Technical Senior High School on the final day of their Kagoshima camp.
The match kicked off at 9 a.m. and started with an early action. In the 1st minute just after the kickoff, after Kobayashi Rikako, who received the ball at the centre, sent the ball to Sonoda Mizuki on the left flank, Sugita Hina responded to Sonoda’s cutback to fire a shot, which just went straight into the goalkeeper’s arms. That illustrated the theme of this match “attacks with coordinating and collective efforts” early in the match. In the 10th minute, Kobayashi sneaked through behind the opposing defensive line for Miura Narumi’s floating pass but nearly missed the opportunity. After that, despite keeping the possession most of time, Japan were not able to finish their play with a shot. In the 21st minute, the opponent’s player unleashed a shot after another player’s cutback from the right side. Hirao Chika well blocked it in front of the goalmouth by throwing her body, and the first period ended at 0-0.
Entering the second period, in the 33rd minute, a Kajiki High School striker rushed for a through ball behind the final line of defence and dribbled past the goalkeeper to roll it into the net for their opening goal. Japan went on aggressive attacks toward the opposing goal but were not able to score to end the second period.
In the 64th minute after the third period started, Mizutani Yuki composedly put Sugita’s through ball in the back of the net to level the score. In the 75th minute, Seike Kiko’s right-footed shot went over the cross bar after Hatanaka Miyuka set up a cross from the right flank. Japan kept attacking for more goals, but the match score remained at 1-1 until the end.

TAKAKURA Asako Head Coach
Players’ conditions in this training camp varied, so I built up the team with physical fitness adjustment of the season’s start. I especially emphasised on defence build-up and the players worked on the training with common understating within the team. We will apparently play matches against opponents who’ve got physical intensity such as elite countries in Asia or other teams at international tournaments. To get used to speed and power as much as possible, we set up two training matches against men’s high school teams. The objective of this team is to build up defence and connect to offence in such matchups against speedy and powerful opponents.
It was good that we could play today’s match with high defensive intent such as control of defensive line, but we have not yet figured out where to get the ball. So we will work on it as our homework. In this training camp, our theme was to build up defence. Even so, the further objective is to create good attacking from defence formulation. You won’t win a match unless you improve your level and quality as an individual and a team against opposing attacks. By the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship in August, we will make improvements one by one and build up a higher quality team.
MIZUTANI Yuki(JFA Academy Fukushima)
We had long stretches possessing the ball in the training match today. But we didn’t have so many situations where we finished attacking with a shot and allowed the opponents to attack on counter-attacks at times when we lost the ball. That’s what was brought up in the first period, so after that we tried to finish with a shot. By finishing our attacks with a shot, we were able to lessen their counter-attacks. My objective in this camp was to put my shot into the net and not to hit my pass off opponents, so I kept them in mind when playing the match. The goal gave me confidence and I believe I was successful in selling myself to our head coach. Talking about passing, when I tried not to hit my pass off an opponent, it sometimes went a bit off the target. When I return to my team, I will practice it to find a way how I can connect the ball to my teammate for sure. In this camp, I found a lot to work on. For when I’m selected for this team again, I will try hard to get better than now.
HIRAO Chika (JFA Academy → Urawa Reds Ladies)
We had the team concept in this match, being aware of passing speed and quality in offence, and defensive coordination and collectivity and active challenges with one more step forward in defence. We had long periods possessing the ball but struggled in finding a way to break through the opposing defence and taking it all the way to goal. We took shots more in the third period than in the first period but weren’t able to score when we should’ve scored. We will train more as our assignment. I think we were able to play collectively in defence. We controlled our defensive line by communicating with each other to make it compact. Today everyone tried throwing her body to block when opponents were trying to take a shot. Me as a goal keeper, that made my play easier. I needed to improve my build-up skill and tried to be careful of what spot to put the ball on. As a result, I’ve got space to myself and was able to be well involved in build-ups. I was also able to figure out where I was standing at by looking at surrounding marks. I learned lots of things in this training camp. I will take this experience back to my team and keep up my work.
