Match Report
The second day of the training camp for the Japan national women’s under-16 shortlisted squad had training match (3 20-minute sets) against JFA Academy Fukushima U-13 (Boys).
From the beginning of the match, the girls’ squad started possessing the ball more than the opponents, but passes laced accuracy and they were not able to reach the opponents’ goal. Then in the 11th minute, they allowed the opponents to penetrate through the middle of the field and score the opener. One minute later, Kojima Seira left off the defender for a pass from Kanekatsu Rio, but Kojima fell short to fire a shot. The first set finished as 1-0 in favour of JFA Academy boys.
In the 23rd minute of the second set, Harada Yuina took the ball up in the right flank and fed Iwashita Kurumi, whose shot was denied by the opposing goalkeeper. Although Japan kept their efforts up to tie the match, the score remained as 1-0 when they saw the second set finished.
Finally in the third set, the U-16 women’s team started showing collective offence and attacking the goal aggressively. In the 47th minute, Nojima Sakura got taken down in the box and acquired a penalty kick. Nojima took advantage of the opportunity for myself and equalised the scoring. Then in the 60th minute, Nojima again stole the ball from an opposing defender in front of their goal and put the go-ahead goal into the upper right corner of the net. The match finished as U-16 women’s squad’s 2-1 win.
Head Coach and Players' Comments
KUSUNOSE Naoki, Head Coach
In this camp, aside from scouting the players, our focus was to improve each player’s skills and raise our standard about 20 % higher in order to win matches against Asian teams. As a result we won the training match 2-1, but our overall skills such as passing quality and intensity to approach the ball are still low and we struggled for long stretches in the match. I felt it is very important for us to play collectively both offensively and defensively, keep playing that way throughout a match, work together and ultimately keep the players and ball moving constantly. We will make our priorities clear according to each situation and keep working for our goal.
KANEKATSU Rio (Urawa Reds Ladies Youth)
In the first day training, I couldn’t communicate with my teammates very well and we couldn’t play well together. But in today’s training, though our communication wasn’t very good yet, we could play better together offensively and defensively as our training went on. In the training match, we couldn’t build up our offence well in the first 10 minutes, but after passing the 15 minutes mark, we were able to put our focus together and we could control the match on our pace. We still have a lot of details to improve, so we will keep communicating with each other and we will be able to play our brand of football and win matches.
MATSUDA Shino (Nippon TV Menina)
I came out for the match telling myself not to be afraid of making mistakes and to play aggressively. In yesterday and today’s training, our coaches told us our communication wasn’t enough. I think we haven’t been able to improve on that and that showed in today’s match result. Me personally, I couldn’t be vocal when we checked the opposing players, and there were also many mistakes in passing and receiving the ball. The match had so many things to learn from. We will have another match tomorrow, so we will try to be vocal, improve what we haven’t been able to do, and pay attention to details including passing and receiving.
WAKISAKA Reina (Cerezo Osaka Sakai Ladies)
After the training sessions of yesterday and today, I am now able to communicate what I want on the pitch a little better than before. In the match, there were so many things that didn’t go well that I think we can’t compete against teams in Asia if we keep playing like this. We don’t have much time left, but we will work hard and do everything possible to make this team better.
KARAHASHI Mayu (Albirex Niigata Ladies U-18)
In the training match, I played a wing midfielder. I want to keep trying to play facing forward more and be a starting point of attacks. Working with the full-back player, I was able to create space intentionally, attack such space behind defenders and communicate well with the full-back. To stay on this squad and play in the World Cup, I think I need to be somebody who is considerate for others and a positive influence for the team both on and off the pitch. I will keep trying to do anything I can.
