Match Report
23 March, on their 6th day of the Brazil Trip, Japan Beach Soccer National Team squad had a practice match against Flamengo. The match went on until extended time with the score at 5-5 and Japan won in the penalty-shoot out.
The match moved quickly right after the kick off; Japan’s OBA Takaaki run on to the pass from MOREIRA Ozu and smashed it with his right foot. The shot hit the back of the net and Japan scored the opener very early in the match. After the goal, Japan took control and made a lot of chances but conceded an equaliser from Flamengo’s free kick. Before the end of the 1st period, Japan’s goal keeper TERUKINA Shingo made a shot and AKAGUMA Takuya made an additional finishing touch and successfully found the net.
Japan kept its rhythm in the 2nd period and managed to make a lot of chances with their combination and set plays which were what they had repeatedly practiced in their training. In the 4th minute, GOTO Takasuke calmly scored a penalty which was Japan’s 3rd goal. However, right after his goal, Flamengo’s middle shot rebounded irregularly and they scored. Both teams scored another goal each and the match became a seesaw struggle of who would get the decisive goal.
In the 3rd period, Japan conceded a goal to make it 4-5, but Oba’s amazing over-head shot equalised the match again. They continued to the extended time with 5-5.
3 minutes of the extended time didn’t give either team any clear chances. The match went on to the penalty-shoot out.
Japan’s goal keeper GOTO Masato successfully saved the 1st penalty. Flamengo’s second penalty didn’t find the goal. Japan’s 2 penalty takers successfully hit the net and they beat Flamengo in the penalty-shoot out 2-0.
Japan made many opportunities just like in the previous match. However, there are a lot of times that they couldn’t finish these chances with goals. They will correct these issues in the training tomorrow and head to the matches against Brazil Beach Soccer National Team on 2 consecutive days from 25 March.
Coach and Players' Comments
Marcelo MENDES, Coach
Flamengo is a stronger team than the previous one, so it was not an easy match for us. The players could understand the team’s tactics and take control of the match. In fact they could always lead the match until the 2nd period. After that, they made mistakes and gave them chances. I still appreciate them for equalising again even though Flamengo was leading the game at that time. We have to correct our issues in defence and we also have to improve our shot accuracy when we can score easily. If we can correct them, I think we can manage games much more easily. Flamengo is a fantastic team with players who have experience playing for the Brazil National Team and winning world titles. It was a very precious experience for us to play against them.
TABATA Teruki (Tokyo Lequios BS)
We won the match today, but we have to improve the issue that we couldn’t score when we had chances and this was also the issue in our first match. The stronger our opponents are, the less chances we have, so we will have stronger motivation to improve our shot accuracy. We will get ready very well to make good results for the matches against Brazil Beach Soccer National Team which will be on day after tomorrow.
MATSUO Naoya (Aveldage Kumamoto BS)
Today we could manage the match well from the beginning with the tactic that we score from the kick off; this was what we have practiced. Generally, we could take control of the match with our rhythm by moving the ball around well. However, we conceded goals from free kicks. This is one of the characteristics of beach soccer, but the match today made me understand the high level of free kick of non-Japanese players. I understood the importance of not conceding fouls again. For the next match against Brazil, I will correct this issue to beat them.
