Match Report
The Japan Beach Soccer National Team, who are participating in the Continental Beach Soccer Tournament 2016, played the third-place match against the Vietnam National Beach Soccer Team in the afternoon of 24 August. After the semi-final loss to Iran, the team had a meeting last night to switch their mind to do their best to win this match.
The game was active from the beginning. In the 1st minute of the first period, Japan’s GOTO Takasuke got a free kick near the penalty area and successfully scored the opening goal. In the 3rd minute, MOREIRA Ozu made an accurate shot from another free kick at the centre of the pitch, scoring the second goal for the team.
However, in the 5th minute, Japan gave away a free kick due to a foul in the centre of the pitch, and the chip shot went over Japan’s goalkeeper and successfully found the net. Vietnam was only 1 goal behind Japan.
Even after conceding a goal, Japan continued to take control, making many chances from their combination plays in front of the goal. In the 9th minute, Moreira scored from another free kick to make it 3-1. Right after the goal, Vietnam also scored their second from a long-range free kick. The first period ended with Japan leading 3-2.
Japan continued to attack aggressively in the second period. In the 13th minute NAKAHARA Yuki scored from a free kick just in front of the goal. Then AKAGUMA Takuya scored from dynamic over-head shots in both 20th and 21st minutes. Japan pushed away Vietnam 6-2. In defence, Japan’s goalkeeper KAWAI Yusuke performed exceptionally well and kept a clean sheet in the second period.
In the third period, Japan conceded a goal in the 29th minute. Soon after, Japanese goalkeeper, TERUKINA Shingo, fired a shot directly into the opponent’s left corner of the net. In the 31st minute, TABATA Teruki scored directly from a free kick and made it 8-3, adding to their lead. Vietnam scored one last goal, but it was not enough to change the outcome of the game. Japan dominated the match from the beginning of the match, winning comfortably with a score of 8-4.
As a result, Iran won the title, Oman were the runners-up, and Japan ended in third place of the competition.
The team will leave Ordos early in the morning of 26 August and will arrive in Japan on the same day.
Coach and Players' Comments
Marcelo MENDES, Coach
We have played a good match against Vietnam today, and I think it was an excellent experience for the players. In beach soccer, free kicks are very important and it was encouraging that we could score 5 goals from them. In this competition, there were new players, experiencing an international match for their first time, and we learned more about these players, allowing us to make better selection for the future international friendlies and other important competitions. It was a great trip for us.
FP #10 MOREIRA Ozu (Fusion)
It had been a long time after the last trip in Brazil. We finally made the trip outside of Japan as a squad. In this tournament in China, we experienced three meaningful matches. We couldn’t attain the title which we were targeting, but won the third place. I felt without any doubt that we improved ourselves as a team. Even though the results may show that we were utterly beaten by Iran, we had a fairly competitive and decent match against them.
As a team, we will do our best to attain a positive result in the next international friendly and the Asian Beach Games, correcting some issues we found in these matches.
FP #9 AKAGUMA Takuya (Dorsole Kitakyushu)
It was very regretful that we couldn’t win yesterday, but we have had a good meeting after the match to switch our mind to play today's game. Throughout the match, we could keep up the high level of play, following our coach’s tactics. I am happy that we won today.
As a player, I will work hard to keep better possession of the ball and contribute to the team. In addition, I will create more scoring opportunities and seek for more goals the next time. We all will go back to our teams and keep working hard in training. We need to improve ourselves to perform better in the international friendly in Hyogo and the Asian Beach Games.
