Japan U-18s advance to semis at Russian int’l tournament

The Japan U-18 side advanced to the semifinals of the Valentin Granatkin Memorial International youth tournament after beating Azerbaijan 4-1 in their third and final group match on Wednesday in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Azerbaijan’s Yusup Khakimov was sent off in the 17th minute, two minutes before Shindo Ryosuke scored the opener. Takagi Akihito then quickly added two goals, in the 22nd and 24th minutes, and Sugimoto Taro scored in the 58th minute for a 4-0 lead. Elnur Jafarov pulled a goal back in the 63rd minute.
With their third straight win, the young Japanese side won Group C with an unbeaten record, setting up a semifinal with Group D winners Turkey on Friday.
Turkey beat Ukraine 1-0, lost 1-0 to Latvia and downed Saint-Petersburg 3-0 in their group.
The other semifinal will be between hosts Russia and Slovakia.
