Match Report
In their third day of U-19 Japan National Team’s training camp, they went through set-plays in the morning and had a training match against Jubilo Iwata at Ecopa Stadium in the afternoon.
In the first practice game, the national side competed well against the professional club. Despite stealing the ball in the opponents’ half and creating scoring opportunities after 20 minutes, the contest stayed in the par and the first game ended scoreless.
From the second practice game on, the professional counterparts competed with the U-18 youth team, and thereafter the Japanese squad took control of the match. In the 52nd minute, national-team defender TOMIYASU smashed a middle-range shot into the net. Furthermore, Japan’s midfielder Endo, observing the opponents’ defender carefully, successfully scored back-to-back goals in the 72nd and 85th minutes, respectively.
The U-19 Japan squad continued their fierce attack throughout the third game. However, the scoreline did not change until the final minute of the contest, where Iwata on the right side sent in an accurate cross to Iwasaki, who connected with a header and scored the fourth and last goal for the national team. The match ended with a sweeping victory 4-0 in favour of the Japanese side.
Players' Comments
MF #7 KAMIYA Yuta (Shonan Bellmare)
We performed fairly well against the professional club team, Jubilo Iwata, in the first game which ended 0-0. However, we have several issues that we need to sort out, and this training match was meaningful in a sense that we found these problems prior to the AFC U-19 Championship. It will become important to make quicker decisions. Furthermore, I believe the match would have been better if our defensive midfielders could understand the flow of the game and control it. We need to work on these issues in the remainder of this training camp.
We did not start the first game well, but gradually we were able to control the backline and defend better. It would have been better if we communicated more about offensive ideas including our building-up plays. We have only a limited time before the AFC U-19 Championship, and it is important for us to improve our level of play and combination. We will keep working hard in the rest of the camp.
MF #8 MIYOSHI Koji (Kawasaki Frontale)
In this morning, we checked our set plays and offensive and defensive coordination to get ready for the training match in the afternoon. All of us had a high level of motivation towards this match, since this was one of the few training matches prior to the championship.
In offence, we couldn’t create many scoring chances. We needed to perform without fearing the consequences (of a poor play). We should have challenged the space behind the defenders aggressively and attempted more shots. Furthermore, we could have tried to break down the opponents’ defence by individual efforts. On the other hand, in defence, we performed well keeping a clean sheet. We defended well in stretches where the opponents took control of the game and had possession of the ball.
We will move to the UAE where we will hold a training starting from 7 October. While working on the issues found in the Jublio match, we will prepare ourselves well including conditioning. We also need to get acclimatised to the scorching heat there.
FW #9 OGAWA Koki (Jubilo Iwata)
Personally, I did not perform well against Jubilo and found several issues that need to be addressed. For example, the combination between the two forward players was not good and we could not control or handle the ball well up front. As a consequence, we could not attack effectively. However, in defence, we defended tenaciously especially using our physical strength and kept a clean sheet. This was definitely a positive takeaway.
We still have time to communicate amongst us. I will work hard and, hopefully, put the team in the right direction to compete for the championship.
MF #10 SAKAI Daisuke (Oita Trinita)
I think we managed the practice match against Jubilo Iwata fairly well. We performed as expected creating attacking chances and defending effectively. However, there were some issues such as making simple mistakes and, at times, we could not coordinate our plays well in front of the goal. Hence, we will work on them in our training. The AFC U-19 Championship will start in 9 days. We will face this tournament as challengers, and we definitely want to qualify for the next year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup.
