Match Report
U-19 Japan Women’s National Team short-listed squad had the third day of their training camp, where they played four sets of 30-minute training match against Hosho High School.
The rain was falling when they kicked off the series of scrimmages. Nine minutes into the first rep, Japan allowed the opening goal when the high school side fired a loose ball off a cross from the side. In the 23rd minute, midfielder MIURA Narumi gave the ball to defender SHIMIZU Risa on the right flank, who took it up and sent a low quick cross, but they failed to materialise the opportunity.
In the second set, after Japan conceded the second goal in the 39th minute through a scramble in front of goal, it was followed by two more in the 43rd and 44th. On the other hand Japan’s attacking side could not reach deep enough in the opponents’ end for shots due to speedy defensive charges on the ball by Hosho.
For the third rep, Japan sent a different line-up onto the pitch, and it helped them score back a goal. Midfielder SUGITA Hina initiated an attack which led to a cross ball from the right by midfielder SHIMAMURA Yukiko and forward SONODA Mizuki’s header to the back of the net.
They wanted to add up more goals, but in the final set, high-school boys and their accelerating dribbles were too much for the women’s squad to handle, which ended up seeing Hosho High School extended the lead in the 95th and 118th minutes before it all ended with the score of 7-1.
Coach and Players' Comments
TAKAKURA Asako, Coach
This is the training camp that marks the start of our journey to the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup to be held in Papua New Guinea, and we had a training match against high school men’s team. Yesterday, we worked out mainly on our defence, but we allowed many goals to faster and stronger high school boys. But there were still some occasions where we were able to handle them collectively.
This is the first team activity since the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship in August, and we called up some new players who weren’t with the team at the AFC U-19. We started as a new team. We still have many things to correct, but I am looking forward to the development of these players who have undeveloped potential. We will keep working hard from tomorrow on.
SUGITA Hina (INAC Kobe)
I played in the third and fourth reps and we lost those two with the total score of 2-1, but we were able to create good rhythm. So I think the details weren’t so bad. Speaking of our offence, we were in sync more than before, and we had more good combination plays and good rhythm.
In defence, we kept denying passing angles as we approached the ball. We were also aware of what we saw in the video footage we watched at the beginning of the training camp and we were able to follow that on the pitch. So we often robbed it back right after we lost it. But as we expected, we couldn’t deal with players with speed and sometimes let them attack the space behind us. So that’s one of the takeaways that we need to keep working on.
MIURA Narumi (Nippon TV Menina)
For the match against quicker boys team, we came out being aware of our combinations and collective defence. In the first rep, as we started getting used to their speed, we were able to defend aggressively.
But in the second, we couldn’t deal with their dribbles and physical strength, and we allowed a goal after goal. I think how to deal with opponents’ speed especially when we are tired needs improvement. We need to be able to run more both offensively and defensively and get to the ball as early and high as possible.
SONODA Mizuki (Musashigaoka College)
Today we played against good high school players, and we paid attention to how to match up against fast and physically strong players. My personal takeaway is that I couldn’t slow down the opponents dribbling with speed and defend well against such players.
Speaking also about defence, we had some situations where I could communicate well with my teammates on the sides, and we had other times when I couldn’t do that. So I want to correct it and work better with my teammates. I will be careful in every single play and raise the quality to help my team win.
