Match Report

The U-20 Japan Women’s National Team short-listed squad had their third day of the training camp and they played a training match against Fujiedameisei High School. The match had three 30 minute segments.

The players gradually got familiar with the speed of the men’s high school players, even though they had difficulties in the beginning. In the 13th minute, midfielder MIZUTANI Yuki moved the ball to midfielder SUGITA Hina, she then passed to defender KITAGAWA Hikaru who overlapped down the left wing, but she couldn’t catch the ball with the best timing. In the 19th minute, defender MORIYA Miyabi moved up the right wing with dribble and crossed in front of the goal. Midfielder OKUBO Mai received it and took a shot but the ball went over the left side of the goal.

In the 33rd minute which was beginning of the 2nd period of the match, Fujiedameisei High School stole the ball from Japan in the middle and scored the opening goal from a looping shot. In the 49th minute, Japan changed all players and tried to equalise. In the 60th minute, midfielder HASEGAWA Yui received the ball from defender SHIMIZU Risa and made a deep pass to the front. Defender MATSUBARA Shiho ran on to the ball and looked to score a goal but it was not successful. The 2nd period ended 0-1.

Japan started even more intense attacks attempting to equalise in the 3rd period but they conceded 2 more goals in the 78th and 85th minutes. The match ended 0-3.

Coach's and Players' Comments

TAKAKURA Asako, Coach
The last training match prior to the FIFA U-20 World Cup was against Fujiedameisei High School, which is one of the strongest high school teams of Shizuoka. We had checked our tactics in defence and offence prior to the match, and our themes today were to play with more attention to detail. We had some time that we could control the match against men’s players with speed, and we could take the ball to the front in a good form, but we could not win. The fact that we lost the match 0-3 made me feel that the team is not strong enough in the situation that we have only one month to go for the World Cup. Our issues are: improving our scoring accuracy when we should score, and managing the match so we can win it. During the month time before the World Cup’s kicking off, we want to prepare ourselves well overcoming these issues.

MOMIKI Yuka (NIPPON TV BELEZA)
It was the last practice match in Japan prior to the World Cup, so all of us played with high motivation. It has been 1 year since the AFC Women’s Championship, now we could check how much we can be consistent with what we have done throughout the past year. As a result, we lost the match 0-3, but I still felt that we have grown up as a team since the last AFC Women’s Championship; we could make a good offence formation and we also defend with clear sense of target. We have one month to the first match of the World Cup. All of us will work even harder to improve our play accuracy.

HATANAKA Miyuka (IGA FOOTBALL CLUB KUNOICHI)
We kicked off the match with attention to making combinations especially in defence, this is what we had focused yesterday in the training. There were some times that we could steal the ball from our combination defence, but there were also the time that we lost the ball again so easily even after stealing the ball. We could have made more chances if we could hold the ball better. When the opponents passed the ball to the space behind our defence line, we raised voices to each other to deal with this type of pass, controlling our defence line. In international matches, it is quite possible that we concede goals once we allow a pass to the space behind us. We will keep paying attention to the space behind our defensive line.
