U-20 Japan Women's National Team stay focused in preparation for quarterfinal in FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016

23 November 2016

U-20 Japan Women's National Team stay focused in preparation for quarterfinal in FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016

With two days before the quarterfinal of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016 against U-20 Brazil, the U-20 Japan Women's National Team held a practice session in the evening on Tuesday 22 November, considering the coming night’s game.

Since the opponents in the quarterfinal, the U-20 Brazil women's national team, tend to attack with their physical strength, the team spent time on one-on-one drills. Each player practiced competitively now and then, and they were more serious in approach. The players did a seven-a-side intrasquad game with a free player to finish the training session.

The quarterfinal of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016 between U-20 Japan and U-20 Brazil will kick off at 19:30 (18:30 Japan Time) on Thursday 24 November.

Players' Comments

GK #21 ASANO Natsumi (CHIFURE AS ELFEN SAITAMA)
The next opponents Brazil are well known for men’s football. I expect they have some skills, which are different from European players. We, three goalkeepers, have been practicing everyday to improve ourselves by staying competitive, so that any of us can be on the pitch whenever necessary. I’m trying to communicate with everyone at least once a day off the pitch, in order to come out of my shell. We’d like to prepare well on and off the pitch to earn a victory.

MF # 19 SHIOKOSHI Yuzuho (Urawa Red Diamonds Ladies)
As one-on-ones are not my strongest point, I need to practice more than others. I’d really like to stay mentally competitive. Although the tournament will be tougher – win or go home - I believe our desire to win is stronger than any other team. So we’d like to play as a united team to win with a strong spirit.

FW #11 KAWANO Juri (Waseda University)
Unlike Japan, Brazil are physically strong. So it’s essential that we understand how to cover that while displaying our own strengths. I’m determined to contribute to the team’s score and I understand I need to get a good result. Having said that, without enjoying ourselves, we cannot play our style. I’d like each of us to stay competitive in every small play and lead the team to win.
