Match Report
The U-19 Japan National Team met the U-19 Brazil National Team for the second match of the SUWON JS CUP. After the defeat in their first game, Japan were determined to earn a victory. They played aggressively in both attack and defence from the beginning of the first half, and found their momentum. After 35 minutes, Japan intercepted to send a long-distance ball into the opponent’s area. NAKAMURA Shunta competed well against the opponent and the ball went to a free space in front of the goal. WADA Masashi, who swiftly reacted to it, was fouled by the opponent’s defender and earned a penalty kick. ITO Ryotaro scored strongly from it with his right foot to strike the opener.
In the 39th minute, Ito, who received the ball on the left, sent the ball through skilfully with a left-footed touch to Nakamura. He sent it towards the goal despite the pressure from the opponent, where Wada reacted well to fire in a shot. The game went into the second half at 2-0.
Although Japan took the initiative mostly in the first half, the talented players of Brazil started their fierce attacks in the second half. Shortly after the start of the second half, in the 47th minute, Brazil reacted to a loose ball in the center, dribbling up through Japanese defenders to send a through ball toward the goal. The opponent calmly struck a goal, closing the gap to one goal.
After 71 minutes, Brazil sent the ball in front of the goal from a corner kick. Although HIROSUE once managed to punch it away, the opponent received a loose ball and dribbled towards the penalty area to score with his left foot, levelling the game 2-2. Despite attacks from both teams, creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities, none of them could find the back of the net until the final whistle. Japan could not sustain their two-goal lead and finished with a painful draw against Brazil.
Japan will meet the hosting country, Korea Republic, who beat France 1-0 in their second game, on Sunday 22 May for the third game of the championship.
Players' Comments
GK #12 HIROSUE Riku (Aomori Yamada High School)
We started the game very well, taking the initiative in both attack and defence. Although we scored two goals and built up positive momentum, we conceded consecutive goals, as we couldn’t react to the opponent’s attack at the beginning of the second half. We did gradually pick up our pace, but we couldn’t find the back of the net. As we couldn’t impact the game in the second half when we were struggling, I’d like to play more calmly in order to take the initiative in the game.
FW #13 WADA Masashi (Yokohama F・Marinos)
I’m very pleased that I can join this tour. It was great to score a goal, as I had the impression that Brazilian players have excellent individual skills. Having said that, I feel frustrated that we couldn’t win in the end. There were many things I couldn’t achieve personally. So I’ll change more in the coming game against Korea Republic.
MF #17 ICHIMARU Mizuki (Gamba Osaka)
Personally, I played in a good atmosphere, even though it was my first international match after a while. We played rhythmically in the first half, and scored two goals. Having said that, it was a shame that we conceded a goal easily under the opponent’s pressure. I must play in a way that I can control the match more and predict the direction of the game. All of us have to raise our level individually to become competitive, so that we can win a game in the Asian final qualifying round in October. By improving individuals, the team will naturally be better. We must continue to work on our tasks back in our respective club teams. We absolutely must win the match against Korea Republic on 22 May. We’ll achieve a victory as a united team.
FW #9 NAKAMURA Shunta (Kashiwa Reysol U-18)
As we lost to France in our first game, we were determined to win the match against Brazil. Although we built up positive momentum by scoring two goals in the first half, we couldn’t stay competitive under the opponent’s pressure and let them level the game. We couldn't continue to take the initiative in the match – which is an area that needs to be fixed. I’d like to improve on the problems, which we found in the previous two games, to get a good result in the last match.
