Match Report

On 27 September, the Japan Beach Soccer National Team won the second match of the group stage of the Asian Beach Games against the China Beach Soccer National Team 7-2.

Under the scorching sun just like the previous group-stage match, Japan kicked off with the ball at 14:30 and attacked right from the beginning.

In the opening minute, GOTO Takasuke scored with a jumping volley shot after receiving the ball from OBA Takaaki. After this opening goal, Japan took control of the match by keeping possession of the ball for a long period.

In the 7th minute, AKAGUMA Takuya, receiving a pass from HARAGUCHI Shotaro, turned himself superbly and fired a shot into the net, extending their lead to 2-0. In the 11th minute, MATSUO Naoya fed Goto, who, in turn, scored with a jumping volley again. The first period ended 3-0.

Japan continued their attack pressuring the opponents’ goal and took control of the second period also. In the 2nd minute, Oba, receiving the ball thown by goalkeeper TERUKINA Shingo, made a direct pass to TABATA Teruki, who successfully scored on a volley. Japan were now ahead 4-0.

However, Japan conceded 2 consecutive goals in both 9th and 11th minutes, respectively. China nearly found their rhythm, now only being 2 goals behind.

Right after China’s second goal, Goto was fouled inside the penalty area and earned a spot kick. He himself netted the placed kick calmly and stretched their lead to 5-2.

In the third period, Japan continued to manage the game well without letting the opponents take control of the game. Oba responded quickly to the opponents’ kick-off shot and created an one-on-one scoring opportunity. He calmly found the net and further extended their lead to 6-2. Right after the goal, in the 3rd minute, Akaguma smashed a stunning overhead shot. Japan were now in complete control of the game, having 7-2 advantage over the Asian counterpart.

In defence, Japan had rough stretches, but centred around goalkeeper KAWAI Yusuke, they defended tenaciously and did not allow the opponents to cut their lead. The match ended 7-2.

Advancing to the knock-out stage of the tournament, Japan will have a light training session on Wednesday 28 September and will play the quarterfinal against the UAE at 14:30 on Thursday 29 September.

Coach's and Players' Comments

Marcelo MENDES, Coach
It was an excellent match. We took control by not giving away easy chances to China. We made good use of different formations and tactics and created numerous scoring opportunities.

From the next game on, it will be the knock-out stage which means we will be out if we lose. We will play against our rival team, the UAE, in the quarterfinals. We are ready to challenge and to do our best, keeping high level of concentration. We are step closer to our goal, winning the championship.

FP #11 GOTO Takasuke (Fusion)
The Asian Beach Games started and we just got through the group stage with 2 consecutive wins. However, we believe that the opponents were not as strong as we anticipated, and we still have many issues that needed to be taken care of. Through this experience, I hope we can improve ourselves by playing each game and win the title in the end. We will make this competition meaningful for us by communicating amongst each other well.

Meanwhile, I have made a lot of friends from different countries through playing beach soccer, and this is an excellent opportunity for me to enjoy and reunite with them by coming across or competing against them in the tournament. Danang is a wonderful city; I am feeling very happy to be here. I want to attain the best result in this city.

FP #7 TABATA Teruki (Tokyo Lequios BS)
Today our concentration was not good in the middle of the match and we conceded two goals, allowing the opponents to find their rhythm. From the next match on, we want to keep a high level of concentration throughout the match, regardless of who are on the pitch—starters or substitutes. I think we could have scored more. It would have been easier for us to manage the match, if we capitalised on the numerous scoring opportunities we had. So we need to improve on our finishing accuracy before the next match.
