Toyama Daiichi capture National High School Championship

14 January 2014

Toyama Daiichi High School edged Seiryo High School of Ishikawa Prefecture 3-2 after extra time with a late rally to capture the National High School Championship at the National Stadium in Tokyo on Monday.
Trailing 2-0 in the second half, Toyama attacked strongly and pulled a goal back on a counter in the 87th minute before leveling the scores with captain Otsuka Sho’s penalty three minutes into additional time.
In extra time, Murai Kazuki struck the winner in the 109th minute, bringing the school and Toyama Prefecture the national crown for the first time in their 25th appearance at the annual competition.
The final of the National High School Championship will be held at Saitama Stadium next year as the National Stadium will be rebuilt for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
