Reviewing the last championship - the 19th All Japan Women’s Youth (U-15) Championship presented by NIKE
17 July 2014
The 19th All Japan Women’s Youth (U-15) Championship presented by NIKE will be held from Saturday 26 July to Friday 1 August. We would like to take a moment to review the previous championship. The total of 289 teams throughout the nation participated in the regional qualifiers, and 32 of them advanced to the 18th Championship, where we enjoyed all the heated contests under a knockout system.
Earlier in the championship, we observed a few surprises including Urawa Reds Ladies Junior Youth (Kanto 7 / Saitama), which had won five straight championships, and the runners-up of the 17th championship FC Vitoria (Kansai 1 / Osaka) both being eliminated, former in the first round and latter in the second round. Four clubs advanced to the semi-final: Fujieda Junshin Soccer Club Junior Youth Blue (Tokai 3 / Shizuoka), Yamato Sylphid 1998 (Kanto 6 / Kanagawa), Tokoha Gakuen Tachibana Junior High School Women’s Soccer Club (Tokai 3 / Shizuoka) and JFA Academy Fukushima (Tohoku 1 / Fukushima). Both semi-finals, Fujieda Junshin vs Yamato and Tokoha Gakuen Tachibana vs JFA Academy Fukushima, became close matches that went into penalty shootouts. The winners Fujieda Junshin and JFA Academy Fukushima moved up to the final.
In the Final, JFA Academy created early chances but could not convert them into goals, and finished the first half scoreless. The second half was a seesaw battle. JFA Fukushima attacked Fujieda Junshin’s end, with their offensive squad showing crisp ball movement led by Tsukamoto Natsuki and Okuma Rana. Fujienda Junshin also fought back as Endo Rika’s shot assisted by a cross by Kitagawa Asuka was barely denied by the crossbar.
Both teams could not score to the end and the match went into penalty shootouts.
Fujieda Junshin won three penalties while Academy Fukushima failed three, and Fujieda Junshin clinched their first-ever trophy.
Will Fujieda Junshin defend their title or will any other team prevent that? Contests at the 19th championship will be interesting to watch again.
