Match Report
The second day of the U-17 Japan Women's National squad’s training camp on Tuesday 26 April saw a training match of four 30-minute periods against a local school in Osaka, Daisho Gakuen High School.
Under the blazing sun, just as in early summer, the match kicked off at 15:30. Japan took the initiative from the beginning of the first period. After two minutes, the defenders TOMITA Miyu and USHIJIMA Riko passed the ball around towards the forward UEKI Riko, who slotted it into the goal, and struck the opener. UEKI once again fired a shot in the sixth minute, and the midfielder KARAHASHI Mayu in the eighth minute, building a three-goal lead. Then after 22 minutes, the forward ENDO Jun pressed aggressively up front, creating an opportunity to intercept a back pass from the opponent’s defender to the goalkeeper and struck a goal. The first period ended at 4-0.
Although Japan stayed eager to look for more goals in the second period, the team struggled to find the back of the net against the opponent, who focused on defence. After 56 minutes, ENDO reacted to a clear ball to pass it to the midfielder MIYAZAWA Hinata, who took a shot. However, the ball went over the goal. The score stayed 4-0 until the end of the second period.
Japan made significant changes to the team in the third period. UEKI scored a goal in the 65th minute, and the midfielder NAGANO Fuka in the 78th minute, followed by another shot by UEKI in the 82nd minute. Then after 89 minutes, UEKI earned a penalty kick, with which she struck a goal calmly. Japan finished the third period 8-0.
Japan never stopped attacking in the fourth period. After 105 minutes, the new forward MATSUMOTO Manaka intercepted the ball through a scramble in front of the goal to fire a shot. In the 118th minute, MATSUMOTO once again headed home, building a 10-goal lead. Japan won the game 10-0.
Coach and Players' Comments
KUSUNOSE Naoki, Coach
The main aims of this training camp are to level up our tactics and concepts, which we had been working on last year, and to share them with the newly joined players. The players were supposed to display her strengths, while working on the quality of each play both in attack and defence.
I’d like to point out that I could often see the players share and use the space behind the opponent’s defenders in the early stages, which was one of our themes in this game. I’d like to improve our quality even more.
HASUWA Makoto (Okayama Sakuyo High School)
In the training game against Daisho Gakuen High School, as the passing for a defensive midfielder was not accurate enough, I’d like to improve the quality and accuracy in tomorrow’s match. I’d also like to stay vocal, so that I can improve myself as much as possible. I’ll play hardest in the remaining two days.
UEKI Riko (NIPPON TV MENINA)
During today’s practice match, I could play, working on how to move the ball around or how to decide the first defender, which we had practiced in the morning. Having said that, we made careless mistakes in passing. So I’d like to improve that. I want to improve as an individual and as a team in preparation for the World Cup in Jordan in September.
