Mr. MAEDA Nobuhiro
With the short programme taking its place in Kashima Heights from 5 April, followed by the intensive course held last week, we have finally got the hang of the course and started to understand other participants’ characters, which have allowed us to build a bond as a group.

This week, on top of our usual coaching sessions, we have conducted a physical training session led by Mr. YASUMATSU Mikinobu (Rikkyo University), who is a member of the JFA Physical Fitness Project, a lecture on presentations from a former news caster Ms. KATAKAMI Chie, and an enthusiastic lecture given by Mr. OKUNO Ryosuke on professional coaching theory. We then observed the ACL match between Kashima Antlers and Gyeongnam FC (Korea Republic) at Kashima Stadium to conduct an analysis of the match and hold a presentation to discuss our findings.

During the lecture on presentations, the participants were given a minute each to talk about what we learned from football. Each of our presentations were filmed and we got to review them afterwards, which was very interesting. We were tipped with many skills we can utilise in our presentations to make our speeches better. I was told that the way I time myself during speeches were actually effective in a positive way. I always thought that it was a bad habit of mine, so that came as a surprise for me.

We all gave our best to showcase our originality in the coaching sessions. The discussion sessions held with other participants, instructors, and players allowed us to get a wider perspective. One of our instructors mentioned that, “You must act as if you are the coach, and you are actually training a professional athlete.” The words left a strong impression, which made me think, “How would a professional player conduct this training?” and allowed me to be more organised and prepared for the sessions. When looking back on my own coaching sessions, I felt like I was not so definitive on my concepts. I didn’t break down my thoughts well enough to allow my players to fully understand and put them into practice. There are so much I need to learn, and I will utilise everything I have learned here to become a better coach.

After all the nerve racking, anxious, hopeful, and fun moments, the three weeks (of Module 1) will come to an end for now. I am looking forward to reuniting with the other participants when Module 2 starts. I am sure that they will be honing up on their coaching skills and be physically stronger when we meet again.

Next time, we will be sharing a report from our youngest participant of this year’s course, Mr. MIYAZAWA Yuki (FC Red Bull Salzburg).
