J3 referee training held for 3rd time this year
18 June 2014
The 3rd J3 Referee Training was held on Saturday 14 June, 2014 in Shinyokohama, Kanagawa. In addition to lectures and discussions, a practical refereeing training session was given to the participants, who, just after the training finished, went on to each J3 Week 16 matches to be held the next day.

This training was held right on the day before their matches, so we centred it on lectures. In the afternoon, we split them into the groups of referees and assistant referees and had them work on the practical training.
They learned in the lecture that they should have various kinds of ideas and they should make it a habit to think positive. I want them to take advantage of those things and act on them when they referee on the pitch.
15 weeks have finished in the season. There are things for them to adjust, but they look back and study them for upcoming matches.
I think the important thing is to do 100% of what they can do now always on the pitch.
KAMIMURA Atsushi, Class 1 Referee
The one third of this J3 season has passed. Each referee has experienced his own assignments and improvements, so this training was very meaningful.
I took the training with three things in mind throughout the training.
= How to communicate my message to players
= How to create self-efficacy
= How important it is to understand various offenses and defences and expect next plays
To take the path to success, you have got to think and try it first for youself, not to rely on others for answers but to think for yourself, and to keep working on your assignments one at a time.
There are more matches to come under hot weather and tough circumstances, but we J3 referees altogether want to keep improving and go to the next level.
HOSOO Hajime, Class 1 Referee
Speaking of one of the themes in this training, “how to communicate effectively to players and league officers”, I was reminded that it was very important to organise your thought and speak clearly so that we can manage matches better and build good relationships with players.
I also learned things about positioning which has always been my problem. I should position myself not only based on the team attacking but also the team defending so that I can expect next plays better and move around effectively.
We watched film where we failed to make good calls and tried to analyse why that happened. That reminded us of the importance of good positioning.
We made sure that staying on the line was essential to judge offside by being aware of where the ball comes from and where the defence line is.
It was a short training, but I will review this training later to use what I learned in actual matches and take advantage of it.
