Match Report
U-14 Japan Women's selection had their second group league match against Guam on 20th after the loss on the previous day. The match was kicked off by Japan. In the 3rd minute, ONISHI Ayuka (Tokushima Lateesha) fired a shot from distance into the left side of the net for Japan's first goal of the tournament.
Although Japan had stretches struggling with Guam employing many players for defence, the young Japanese girls gradually started to break through the opponents with their trademark passing moves.
In the 14th minute, GATTO Yukino (Urawa Reds Ladies Junior Youth), pairing with Onishi at the central defence, was brought down in the box. Then, UEDA Kana (Urawa Reds Ladies Junior Youth) composedly netted the penalty shot earned by the play and added one more in the 16th minute. As SAITO Riko (Shimootofuke Junior High School) scored in the 18th, 21st, 33rd and 35th minutes and OIKAWA Riko (FC Miyagi) also netted in the 26th minute, Japan finished the first half with a nine-goal rout.
In the second half, Ueda put home in the 44th and ONO Haruka (JFA Academy Fukushima) added goals in the 55th, 62nd and 66th minutes. In the closing minutes, Onishi, the opening goal scorer, found the net from the edge of the box to cap the high-scoring win for her side.
The junior high girls squad struggled against Guam's defence throwing their body and their shots were denied by opposing goalkeeper's fine saves, but they showed what they have trained such as combinations and quick responses to second balls.
Their third opponents are Chinese Taipei, who fell to Korea Republic but scored a goal in a 1-3 loss. If Japan grab a win or draw, their final round berth is to be determined.
Head Coach and Players’ Comments
KATO Kenj, Head Coach (JFA National Training Centre Coach)
Our task was how to score against opponents who were to sit back in their end with all of eleven players. We were able to keep moving the ball effectively and show different kinds of attacking patterns. But in the second half, we made haste too much and made plenty of mistakes. But we didn't allow any chance to the opponents by taking advantage of quick transitions. Like the way to cope with headers in defence and the quality of passes from the defensive line, we have been improving some parts of our game. But we still need to improve accuracy such as the way to meet cross balls in front of goal. Just like today's, we will make the next one where we can take the initiative both in offence and defence.
OIKAWA Riko (FC Miyagi)
We went out for today's match to connect our plays to a goal. I'm glad we got all the way to goal by challenging aggressively. I was able to feed through balls and final balls that led to our goals for strikers. But individually, I'm disappointed I scored only one goal. In the meeting last night, we had a conversation to use space behind the defensive line and we all kept that point in mind. But the quality of final passes weren't good enough, so we will try to be careful of it in the upcoming matches. At the shooting moment, I was able to put the ball into the open near side, looking at the position of the opposing goalkeeper. From tomorrow, I want to stick to scoring a goal more than before.
SAITO Riko (Shimootofuke Junior High School)
Before the match, we had our game plan to put high pressure from the front line, to win the ball when we have a chance to win it and to limit space to let a second defender win the ball easily when we cannot win it at the first approach. We also attempted to always go for a goal with the first control with keeping goal-scoring mind-set. Then we tried to look around and create space for ourselves by good dealings against an opponent. As a team, every player at every position had mindset to go for a goal. It was also good that we possessed the ball to break through the opposing defence and sent the ball behind the defensive line for a goal. But we still need to improve passing and controlling quality in front of goal and take advantage of goal-scoring opportunities from cross balls. And we had some situations where we passed back when we could've faced forward. That's also something we need to improve. My goal came from my continuous approaches that I always tried to meet crosses from sides and pick up loose balls through teammate's shot.
