Kashima beat Shanghai SIPG 4-3 on aggregate in ACL 2018 Round of 16 Second Leg to advance to quarterfinals
17 May 2018
Second leg matches of the AFC Champions League 2018 (ACL) round of 16 took place from Monday 14 to Wednesday 16 May throughout various locations in Asia. The last Japanese team remaining, Kashima Antlers played an away game against Shanghai SIPG from China PR.
Kashima has won the first leg at home 3-1 on Wednesday 9 May, but the team conceded early in the second leg. Former Brazilian international, HULK converted a loose ball from a free kick to give the Shanghai side the lead in the sixth minute.
Shanghai continued to dominate the game, but Kashima showcased a solid performance in defence to minimise the damage. In the 42nd minute, DOI Shoma, who received a return pass from ANZAI Koki on the left, struck a brilliant goal with a heel kick to level the match, giving his side a precious away goal.
The equaliser meant that Shanghai needed four goals in order for them to advance to the next round. Desperately needing goals, Shanghai came out with high intensity in the second half, but Kashima’s goalkeeper KWOUN SUNTAE performed superbly to shut down the opponents.
Shanghai’s second goal came in the 80th minute when they converted a penalty kick, but Kashima managed to limit the damage to that single goal in the second half, ending the match 1-2 after the five minute additional time.
Despite the loss, Kashima advanced to the quarterfinals with an aggregate score of 4-3. Kashima had lost in the round of 16 in their past five tries, making this advancement their first in the ACLs.
The drawings for the fixtures of quarterfinals will be held on Wednesday 23 May.
Coach's Comment
OIWA Go, Coach (Kashima Antlers)
Unfortunately, we lost this match. Our opponents pressured us hard and we were dominated in the second half, but we showed some effective counter-attacks. I had a feeling if we can score off those limited opportunities, we would regain our rhythm. For now, I’m just glad we made it through to the next round.
(Regarding DOI’s away goal)
After analysing our opponents, we were determined to penetrate the flanks. The players executed the game plan well. It was a great goal and a very important goal for us. I highly value his effort.
(What it means to advance to the next stage)
For the club, this was a significant challenge and it means the world for us to achieve this feat. This was only accomplished with our players strong heart and tenacity. But we must not forget that we are not done yet, so we will prepare ahead of our next match.
(Regarding the last ten minutes of the match)
I looked into my players eyes and saw the confidence in them, so I instructed the substitutes to convey the message to display solid defence until the very end. I was not worried at the last ten minutes of the match. I am very proud of my players for showing such great heart when facing adversity.
Tournament Period:30 January 2018 (Tue.) ~ 10 November 2018 (Sat.)
