Match Report
The Japan Beach Soccer National Team had the final of the Asian Beach Games against Oman Beach Soccer National Team on 2 October.
Japan was the runner-up last time, and they were beaten by Oman in the final of the World Cup Asian qualifier in 2015; this is the match for Japan to take their revenge.
Japan kicked off the match at 15:30 Oman started the match strongly taking shots, and many of the Japanese players had close contact with Omani players in each area of the pitch to try to defend these shots before moving the ball forward themselves. Both teams made many chances displaying their characteristics.
The match moved in the 3rd minute; OBA Takaaki received the ball on the left side and passed it to GOTO Takasuke, then Oba smashed the volley shot after receiving the ball back from Goto. Japan successfully scored the opener. After 4 minutes, MOREIRA Ozu trapped the Omani defenders with dribbling and took a middle-shot. They extended their lead to 2-0.
Japan was expected to carry on the match with their control, but they conceded one goal from the kick off shot right after the Japan’s 2nd goal. Both teams made chances and the match became a see-saw game. Neither team could score again andthe 1st period ended 2-1.
Japan had a challenging time against Oman in the 2nd period; they aggressively took shots finding any chances. In the 3rd minute, Oman scored from a volley shot from a long-throw. Oman equalised 2-2. After the equaliser, Japan, who had the wind at their back, attacked the Oman’s goal aggressively but could not find space to take any shots.
The match continued to be see-saw game in the 3rd period. Oman defended the front of the goal consistently not to allow Japan’s easy shots, and defended the goal using their bodies. Japan on the other hand, carefully attacked with attention to defence at the same time. Goto and AKAGUMA Takuya tried to score by some shots such as over-head shots, but could not score. Both teams could not make any decisive chances and the 3rd period ended 2-2. The match went on to extended time.
Right after the kick off of the extended time, the air changed suddenly. In the 2nd minute, Japan got a free kick and Moreira smashed the ball strongly with his right foot, the ball hit the inner side of the goal post and then went inside of the goal. Japan finally got the long-awaited goal and gained their momentum. Right after the shot, Oba scored an over-head shot and extended the lead to 4-2. However, right after the 4th goal, Oman broke through Japan’s defence in the middle and scored one goal, 4-3. Japan didn’t get nervous and used the rest of the match time calmly and the match ended.
At that moment, all the players on the bench and staff ran to the players on the pitch and shared their joy of the title. Japan beach Soccer National Team had never won the title in the past Asian Beach Games, and this is their first title. The team could end with the result that they have won 8 consecutive matches since their International Friendly in September.
Coach and Players' Comments
Marcelo MENDES, Coach
Since I came to Japan, I have been waiting for this moment. This is the special day for us. As we expected, the match was not easy. Oman Beach Soccer National Team is a wonderful team and their play was brilliant as usual. However, we believed that we could beat them and the players could manage the game perfectly in the 1st period. In the 2nd and 3rd periods, we were not able to make use of many chances and the Omani goalkeeper’s fine saves, but the players could score 2 goals within the first 2 minutes of extended time, which allowed us to get the Gold Medal.
Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to Japan Football Association and all of the staff who work for this championship. I also appreciate staff who prepared these wonderful sessions and the match environment. We have been a champion in the Asia, I want to be stronger for the next competition.
FP #10 MOREIRA Ozu (Fusion)
We have just added a new history of Japan’s beach soccer. I appreciate wonderful plays of each member of this team, the coach, all the other staff, and supporters. I am very grateful. I am also happy as a captain of this team. I won’t forget this sensation and I will continue to work hard to keep getting good results.
FP #7 TABATA Teruki (Tokyo Lequios BS)
Our lowest target was to win the title of the Asian Beach Games, so it was good that we could achieve it. I believed that we would be able to win the title if we can maximise what we can do, in fact I was confident that we could do it. Spending about 3 weeks as a squad member is a rare experience, so I also think it was very good for us to build-up the team in this opportunity. This is just one of the things that we want to achieve, so I should not be satisfied yet, I will keep working well to grow up as a player.
FP #8 OBA Takaaki (Dorsole Kitakyushu)
I am simply happy that we could finish this competition with the title, it is the best result. I would like to express my hearty thanks to my team mates, coach, staff, and our supporters including the ones who came all the way from Japan. We have other challenges such as the Beach Soccer World Cup, Asian qualifier, and other competitions. I feel that we should not be fully satisfied with today’s result and we have to keep chasing better play as a team.
Today, we could not score regardless of many chances and ended up going into the extended time. It was very difficult for us. Personally, I still have many issues to solve. I will keep working hard in my daily sessions to play with better quality in the next competition.
