Match Report

Japan played a one-sided game in their third match of the qualifying round as an opposing team player was ejected in the first half.

Nishimoto netted an opening goal in the 5th minute followed by Kajiyama in the 8th and 11th, Sakimura in the 14th and 24th, Ito Ryotaro in the 23rd and Ito Hiroki in the 29th minute. Those gave Japan seven goals only in the first half. Japan kept attacking in the second half as Watanabe Yo scored in the 47th, Sakimura added two in the 53rd and the 58th, which totalled to four goals for the day for himself. Ito Ryotaro also put home for a hat trick, substitute Tagawa netted his second goal in last two matches, and at the end Watanabe Yo fired his team’s 13th goal of the match to wrap it up.

The match held at the same time between Korea Republic U-17 and Hangzhou Greentown F.C Youth ended with the former’s penalty-shootout win. Therefore Japan notched the top spot of Group A above Korea by points to advance to the top tournament. The Japan side play a quarter-final match against Kunimi High School, second-placed in Group D, at 9:30 a.m. on 21st.

Players' Comments

ITO Hiroki (Jubilo Iwata U-15)
I played as a defensive midfielder today. How we can break through the opponents who retreat to defend in their end is our homework to improve. In the match, I tried to shoot from outside to pull them out. I had just one shot, but I believe I was able to do my job because of the goal I scored. The final tournament starts tomorrow. We will win one by one to get back on Korea Republic in the final.

FUNAKI Kakeru (Cerezo Osaka U-18)
I was able to take advantage of my strengths today. After an opposing player sent off, there was wide space on the sides, so it was good that I got involved in attacking a lot and fed crosses. But we need to think more about how we can break through opponents sitting back. To do that, we will communicate with each other more and share various things to win the match tomorrow.

WATANABE Yo (Urawa Reds Youth)
In the situation where we can move on to the final tournament with a win today, it’s good we actually won and moved forward. Individually, I’m glad to score two goals, but I need to look back the moments when I could have scored more goals. Also I have more assignments, so I will try to improve little by little. From tomorrow, we will play the final tournament. We will focus on the results and work hard to win the title.
