Match Report

21 June, the second day of their training camp. The U-20 Japan Women’s National Team short-listed squad had a practice match against a local men’s high school team Teikyo Nagaoka High School.

The match consisted of 3 mini games of 30 minutes. They kicked off under cloudy weather. U-20 Japan Women’s National Team short-listed squad started playing with their theme of “one offense, one defense.” In the 7th minute, defender NORIMATSU Ruka moved the ball drastically on the left wing. Forward KANDA Wakaho crossed to the front of the goal but it was cleared by an opponent’s defender. The first game ended 0-0 through the effort made by Japan’s goalkeeper HIRAO Chika and other defenders.

For the second game, the goalkeeper was substituted. Japan wanted to get the opening goal, but they conceded it in the 32nd minute. Teikyo Nagaoka High School smashed a shot from a deeper spot on the right wing. In the 45th minute, all field players were changed and Japan tried to equalise, but they conceded additional goals in the 54th, 58th, and 62nd minutes and the score became 0-4.

In the third game, Japan was desperate to catch up and pressured from the front line. In the 69th minute, defender MINAMI Moeka passed the ball to midfielder HASEGAWA Yui who jumped into the space behind a defender, she then trapped one defender and made a shot, unfortunately this was blocked by the opponent. The match was controlled by the opponent and Japan allowed another two shots in the 71st minute from a corner kick, and in the 85th minute when Japan’s goalkeeper SUZUKI Aguri blocked the shot and it was pushed back to the net. The match ended 0-6.

Coach and Players' Comments

TAKAKURA Asako, Coach
In this opportunity to play against one of the strongest teams in Niigata, Teikyo Nagaoka High School, our strength was on the theme of “one offense, one defense.” We had longer time to be pushed by them with strong pressure, and as a result the match ended 0-6. In the morning, we had a game with attention to building-up from the goalkeeper, and I think they could play with this idea in the practice match.

On the other hand, they still have issues such as passing accuracy and combination; hence they couldn’t take the ball to finish. A quicker switch between offense and defense, and building up their offense form are the things to improve. We keep working hard for these issues.

MATSUMOTO Mamiko (Urawa Red Diamonds Ladies)
Today I played against Teikyo Nagaoka High School as a revenge match since we were defeated by them last summer. While we knew the difficulties in playing against the team with consistency, speed and power, we still conceded multiple goals in the second game in which I played. I strongly learned about the importance of adjusting ourselves during the match.

I also learned that maintaining patience for a long time of being pushed is important. If I could have calmed down the game a bit more, the flow of the game could have been different. We could find what to do by playing against a good team, so we want to work hard to improve our level in the remaining 5 months.

KAWANO Juri (Waseda University)
What was important for us was how much we could move the ball and find the chance to attack, while playing against the men’s team with speed. However, we had more time to focus on defense and we couldn’t make chances very much, so we have to improve many things such as trapping stronger and speedier players. We have only one day left for this training camp, I want to absorb as much as possible to grow up to be a better player.

SUGITA Hina (INAC KOBE LEONESSA)
While the opponent were better in the number of corner kicks and free kicks, it was good that we didn’t concede any goal from their set plays. We could stay consistent to defend and we could keep the ball well to start our offense after stealing the ball from them.

However, what wasn’t good was our response to the players who were quick to move and jumped into the space behind us, and we had dangerous moments; this is our issue. In offense, we could move the ball around, but we had fewer chances to move towards the goal and we have to improve the accuracy of our final passes.

MIURA Narumi (NIPPON TV BELEZA)
It was an important match in terms of responding to the players with more speed and power. In defense, we could be persistent staying in front of the goal, but our combination was not good. This is the thing for us to improve.

In offense, we could move the ball around more calmly than before, and we could go to the opposite side from the aggressive players, they are the things we want to carry on doing. There is only one day left for the camp, but I just want to do my best to improve the issues found in the match today.
