Match Report

Japan women’s U-19 team took on Kamimura Gakuen men’s team in a scrimmage of four 25-minute periods on their third day of the Kagoshima camp.

The match kicked off at 3 p.m. in a light snowfall. Just after four minutes from the start, a Kamimura Gakuen’s player dribbled through Japan National Women’s U-19 Team’s left flank, but Norimatsu Ruka threw her body and stole the ball off him. However, an opposing player picked up the clear ball and stabbed it into the right corner of the net to open the scoring. As the young girls were not able to keep up with opponents’ high pressing and pace, they continuously conceded goals in the 12th, 21st and 23rd minutes. In the 27th minute just after the second period started, Sugita Hina picked up an opposing missed pass and floated the ball to Sonoda Mizuki. Sonoda dribbled into the box and sent a composed shot past the opposing goalkeeper, who came up front, to give her side the first goal of the match. Yet in the 32nd minute, Japan again gave up a goal when the opponents broke through the defence with a wall pass. In the 36th minute, Japan earned a free kick at the left edge of the box. Anzai Yuka rushed in front of the goal for Sugita’s pass but just failed to make it through. Kamimura Gakuen added two more goals in the 48th and 51st minutes. Japan women’s team replaced all the players on the pitch from the start of the third period. Yet soon after that, they conceded another goal in the 55th minute. The fresh legged players, who were watching the first and second periods off the pitch, got into the match well as they capped more ball touches than ones in the previous periods. But they were not able to connect the ball to up front, and the score remained at 1-8 until the end.

TAKAKURA Asako, Head Coach
We played the match with the theme, coping with intensity and speed. As a whole, we played tenaciously but still have things to improve like combinations in defence, continuity and transition between fast and slow plays. It’s a positive side that we scored a goal through a great play. But we still need to improve the quality of possession and plays toward the goal with more swift movements on the ball and pursue attractive, offensive football with all the players involved on the pitch. We conceded lots of goals, yet we’ve learned a lot of things and found out what to improve in the match against powerful Kamimura Gakuen. We will overcome each of challenges to target the higher level.

HIRAO Chika (formerly JFA Academy Fukushima / currently Urawa Reds Ladies)
Kamimura Gakuen played with short passes in front of goal. It was hard to figure out my proper position and tell my teammates about who should’ve challenged as the first defender. We had lots of situations where we gave up goals even through small positioning mistakes and late challenges by first defenders. Personally, I was able to take a full swing without being afraid of failure. Next time, when we have a match, I will be aware of and share it in the team to get it better.

HAZA Hisui(Nippon Sport Science University)
In the morning session, we worked on a game using our brain and training grouped by each position. The theme of this camp, using our brain and playing smart, is the biggest thing to improve both for me and for the team. I was reminded once again that achieving this theme is difficult, but I will always try to be aware of it and develop myself into a smart player. In the grouped training session, defenders ran over ball clearance. How well we can cope with crossballs is important when playing on the world stage. I sometimes had situations where I didn’t make perfect clear balls, so I want to improve the quality of ball clearance.
In the match against Kamimura Gakuen high school boys team, it was good that we were able to defend tenaciously throwing our body in front of goal. But we spent most of time defending in our end and ended up with defending until the end. You won’t win by just defending. So we will show defence that can lead to a good attack in the next match. Today we struggled with men’s pace and physical intensity. To fight against teams in the world, I need to become a player who easily gets through such differences. In the training tomorrow and day after tomorrow, I will try to improve what I found today and take advantage of it in the match on the final day.

ENDO Yu(Urawa Reds Ladies Youth)
As they are a men’s team, the speed and physical intensity was totally different. And we had difficulty keeping up with them because we weren’t used to it. I played as a right back. I usually play a match against women’s team, so I wasn’t able to figure out appropriate distance and position and how to let teammates move in defence. And I had lots of situations where I took a challenge carelessly. But in the second half, I was able to pick myself up, calling out to up front players and getting the ball on one-on-one situations to connect it to my teammates. I already set my goal in this camp that I will brush up my skill “winning one-on-one,” which is essential for a defender. In the remaining half of the camp, I will bring out my best and work hard as much as my teammates.

SENO Yuki (Shutoku Senior High School)
It took me long time before I get used to speed of the other side and they had aluxury of pass around the ball around the box area. It was our target to switch marking smoothly but I must admit we were not fast enough to cope with the other side’s fast ball movement. My personal targets were to change the pace of pressing, intercept the ball by anticipating and not let the other side send a pass by checking but quite often I was not confident about when to go defence on them.As we had ended up in making a space in the midfield and the space were well-taken by the other side, I want to try to take the ball aggressively putting priority on the ball side. I suppose attacks we made after intercepting the ball were careless and this would be our issue not being able to build up nicely. I want to overcome identified issues by figuring out how to solve them and I am going to work on training bearing that in mind.

SONODA Mizuki (Kyoto Seika Girls High School)
Because speed and body type were different, we had a hard time in many situations like competing with goalkeeper for a long ball, trying to receive the ball in front of the others side only to the other side taken the ball, too slow to give a support when side half keeps the ball, etc. Our team persistently defended and created some chances and could score a goal. We talked to each other to revise some issues appeared in the game. For enhancing our team performance, I want to talk closely to each other and determined to enhance our team and I want to make myself prominent much more.
