Match Report

On Friday 8 November, the U-18 Japan National Team played their second match in Group J of the AFC U-19 Championship 2020 Qualification, where they defeated the U-18 Mongolia National Team 9-0 to record their second consecutive victory.

Following their 10-0 victory over the U-18 Guam National Team, the Japanese side has rotated their entire starting line-up in this match against Mongolia. The team created multiple chances through their quick ball movements in the early minutes, before scoring the first goal in the seventh minute. The opener came when NAKAMURA Takumi received a long ball from YAMASAKI Taichi, before sending a cross towards the centre, allowing OMORI Shingo to convert the delivery to capture the net. Omori added another goal in the 12th minute, when he connected with a cross from Nakamura to double the Japanese lead. Despite taking full control of the match, Japan struggled to find their rhythm in the remainder of the first half, until HARUYAMA Misaki broke the silicon by scoring the team’s third goal just before halftime.

Before entering the second half, coach KAGEYAMA Masanaga sent his players onto the pitch by telling them, “Don’t react to them, we need to take the initiative and shake up the game.” The players responded to their coach’s words and started a goal spree in the second half. With Nakamura starting the action in the 49th minute, KATO Hijiri converted a cross sent by ISHIURA Taiga to make it 5-0 in the 66th minute. Haruyama scored back to back goals in the 73rd and 76th minute to further extend the Japanese lead. Team captain SHIBATA Sosuke helped setup the team’s eight goal in the 87th minute, allowing the ball to get connected through Nakamura and TAKEDA Hidetoshi, before Haruyama struck a spectacular shot from distance. Omori capped off the action by scoring his third goal of the match in the 89th minute to give Japan a 9-0 victory.

The U-18 Japan National Team will now face the U-18 Vietnam National Team on Sunday 10 November to determine the winner of Group J.

Players' Comments

DF #3 YAMASAKI Taichi (Juntendo University)
Looking back on this match, although the team has won the match, I personally was not able to showcase a satisfying performance. I will review the match films and make the necessary adjustments ahead of our next match. As expected, the match against the U-18 Vietnam National Team will determine the winner of this group. The match will be played under a complete away atmosphere, so we must focus on getting our jobs done. In order to win the match, we hope to showcase our creativity while executing our team’s game plan. We will continue to strive together as a team to become a strong team, rather than a good team.

DF #15 BANGNAGANDE Kashif (FC Tokyo U-18)
I had to leave the team for my club team, so I had less time getting adjusted to the climate here in Vietnam. Following our match against the U-18 Guam National Team, I feel like our team was able to prepare ourselves thoroughly and it was great to see us keep a clean sheet in today’s match against the U-18 Mongolia National Team. However, we still saw many opportunities getting wasted, so we still need to improve the quality of our plays in the final third. Our next match against the U-18 Vietnam National Team will be a crucial match for us, so we hope to enter the match with strong determination to win this qualification round as a team.

MF #7 SHIBATA Sosuke (Shonan Bellmare)
Similar to our match against Guam, Mongolia played very defensively against us today, and our main focus was on how to break through their defence to score goals. I personally saw myself make many mistakes in this match, so I felt the need to improve my plays at a fundamental level. In our final match, we hope to continue to apply aggressive pressure to force turnovers and build the attacks through our combination plays. We will give our best efforts to conclude this tour on a high note.

FW #13 HARUYAMA Misaki (Teikyo Nagaoka High School)
After concluding our first two matches, we feel confident that we are able to showcase the football style we are striving for. The team has shown great focus and kept a clean sheet in both matches while scoring multiple goals. We hope to continue with this trend and win through this qualification round as a team. I will give my best efforts to score goals and do whatever it takes to help the team win this final match, so that the team can reach the AFC U-19 Championship 2020.
